What an auditor asks, and what you can now show

ISO 22002 clause 16.3, FSSC 22000 clause 2.5.4, BRCGS 5.4 and SQF 2.7.2 all want the same four things: a documented methodology, an assessment that covers the processes and products of the organisation rather than stopping at incoming raw materials, a mitigation plan with detection in it and not only prevention, and evidence that somebody is watching the outside world. A severity multiplied by likelihood register with no evaluation of the seven factors is the most common finding on this clause. This tool answers all four.

What you get

• Eleven material groups, already written. Bulk liquids and commodities, spices and colours, meat and fish, dairy and functional ingredients, certified and claim ingredients, allergen status, packaging and printed labels, supplier documents and certificates, finished product in storage and dispatch, finished product on the market, and returns, rework and waste. Each carries the materials in it, the supply chain map, the fraud types and the scenario written as a fraudster would plan it.
• The seven factors from the clause, scored properly. Economic vulnerability, historical data, detectability, access in the supply chain, the supplier relationship, certification and assurance, and chain complexity, each 1 to 3, summed to an opportunity score and converted to a probability on the workbook bands.
• The grouping rule, enforced. A group rated above 10 is flagged to be broken up and assessed material by material, which is the rule the method sets and the one sites forget.
• Residual scoring that stays honest. The tool says plainly that economic vulnerability and the sector record almost never move, because the world price of a material and the industry incident history are not in your gift. What your measures move is detectability, access, the relationship, assurance and complexity.
• A mitigation plan with detection in it. Preventive measures and control measures side by side, with the verification activity, its frequency, the records, the responsible role, the incident trigger and the legal basis.
• A horizon scanning log. The date, the source, what was found, which group it affects and what was done, which is exactly the evidence an auditor asks for when you say you scan.
• The Excel workbook. Team and Method, the seven factor assessment, Mitigation Plan, Risk Register, Horizon Scanning, Matrixes and Action Tracker, formatted, carrying your site name and your revision number.

How it works

1. Buy the tool. Your workspace is created on ascfoodsafety.com and the welcome email carries the link and the key.
2. Enter your site name, your scope and your team. The scope sentence is the first thing an auditor reads.
3. Work down ASC’s eleven material groups. Change what is not true of your facility, delete what does not apply, add what is missing.
4. Score each line. The rating, the band and the action list update as you type, and the tool tells you which lines an auditor would ask about first.
5. Download the Excel workbook for the audit or the management review. Come back and update it whenever something changes, and export it again.

Built on the standards

The method is ASC’s RA18 Food Fraud Vulnerability (VACCP) risk assessment, the same workbook our consultants install on client sites. The seven factors are the ones named in the ISO 22002 clause 16.3 note. The clause mapping is ISO 22002 clause 16.3, FSSC 22000 Version 7 clause 2.5.4, BRCGS Food Issue 9 section 5.4 and SQF Edition 9 clause 2.7.2.
