ASCloud versus international food safety platforms: an honest comparison for Southern Africa

If you have searched for food safety software you have seen the established international compliance platforms, most of them built in North America or Europe. ASCloud is the paperless food safety management system built and run by ASC Food Safety Consultants in South Africa. Both replace paper records with digital checklists, monitoring and document control. The differences are in who the system was built for, how it is priced, what currency you pay in, who updates the content when a standard changes and who answers the phone when an auditor is in the building. This comparison sets those out plainly so that you can decide which fits.

Who the system was built for

International platforms are built first for the markets where they sell most, which means the FDA’s regulations, the EU framework and the global GFSI schemes, with other countries added as configurations. ASCloud was built for sites audited in South Africa and its neighbours, which means Regulation R638 and the Certificate of Acceptability, Regulation R908 for HACCP, the Department of Health and municipal inspection expectations, and the same GFSI schemes, FSSC 22000, BRCGS and GLOBALG.A.P., as they are audited by South African certification bodies. The country pages for Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia name the local regulators and show prices in local currency. That is not a configuration option on ASCloud, it is the starting point.

Pricing model and currency

ASCloud publishes every price on its website in rand, per site per month, with setup, modules and add-on standards listed. Most international platforms quote on request. Ask what currency the quote is in, because a dollar or euro contract moves with the exchange rate and gives the finance team a foreign payment to process every month. ASCloud bills in rand and shows a guide conversion in 24 currencies for sites elsewhere in Africa. Ask the international vendor for a current quote, because terms change, and compare the four numbers that matter: per site per month, setup, the cost of a second site and what is excluded.

Who maintains the content

A food safety system is only as current as its last update. When FSSC 22000 moved to Version 7 in May 2026, every certified site needed its documents and checklists reviewed. On ASCloud that mapping is done by ASC’s own FSSC 22000 and BRCGS lead auditors, who audit and implement these standards for a living, and it arrives in your system as proposed revisions to accept. Ask any platform the same question: who reads the scheme documents, when, and how does the change reach my site. The answer tells you whether you are buying software or a service.

Support, and what happens at the audit

ASCloud’s support is the consultancy behind it. The people who set up your system are food safety specialists with South African phone numbers, in the same time zone as your audit, and ASC’s offices in Gqeberha, Johannesburg and Cape Town carry more than 366 Google reviews between them. Many international platforms support mainly through ticketing and chat, often well, but rarely with someone who has sat on the other side of a BRCGS audit table in Johannesburg.

Where an international platform may suit you better

Honesty cuts both ways. If you are a multinational with sites on several continents and a head office that wants one platform everywhere, an international vendor with offices in those regions may be the right call. If you need deep integrations with a global ERP already standardised across the group, the larger vendors have more connectors built. ASCloud integrates with SAP and Sage per site on a quoted basis, which is right for South African groups and may not be right for a group of forty sites across three continents.

The short version

If your sites are in Southern Africa, your auditors are South African, you want prices in rand on a public page, and you want the content maintained by people who audit the standards, ASCloud is built for you. If you are part of a global group standardising on one platform worldwide, compare both carefully and ask for the four numbers. Either way, do not buy on the demo. Ask to see your own checklist loaded and running on a phone before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

Is this comparison independent?

No. ASC builds and sells ASCloud. The facts about any other platform should be checked on that vendor’s own website, which is why this article does not quote their prices.

Can I move from another platform to ASCloud?

Yes. Setup includes loading your existing documents and building your checklists, whichever system or paper they come from.

Does ASCloud cover SQF?

SQF content can be loaded as an additional standard. Ask on the demo call, because the Edition 10 content is being prepared for audits from January 2027.

Do you sell outside South Africa?

Yes. Sites in Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia are billed in rand with local currency shown as a guide. Setup is remote or on site with travel quoted.
