South African food plants run through scheduled power cuts and dead zones in cold stores, and the food safety record is still due. The honest position for any food safety app, ASCloud included, is that a checklist already open on a device can be completed without signal and uploads when the connection returns, with the time the check was actually done preserved. Starting a new task, downloading a new template or syncing a photo needs a connection. Devices must stay charged, because records waiting to sync stay on the device until then. As at October 2026 this is how ASCloud works on iPhone, iPad and Android.
What works offline
Any checklist opened while connected stays available on the device: the items, the limits, the photo and signature fields. The operator completes it in the cold store or during the cut, and the record carries the device time of each entry. When the signal returns the record uploads, the dashboard updates and any escalation that was due fires with the real times shown, so a late entry is shown as late, which is what the auditor expects.
What needs a connection
Opening a task that was not already on the device, receiving a new template version, uploading photos and the dashboard view itself. The practical answer is a routine: at shift start, with signal, each person opens the shift’s tasks so they are on the device. A cheap power bank per tablet covers a four-hour stage.
Planning the records through a cut
A cold room check during load shedding is the most important check of the day, because the temperature is climbing. On ASCloud the check is already on the device, the limit is beside the reading, and a reading over the limit opens a corrective action that syncs the moment the signal returns, alerting the supervisor. Where temperature loggers are integrated, they continue to log on battery and upload when the network is back, so the record has both the probe trace and the manual check.
Why this matters at the audit
The auditor is not interested in whether the power was off. The auditor is interested in whether the cold room was checked, by whom, at what time, and what happened when the reading was high. A paper record filled in at 06:00 for a 02:00 check cannot answer that. A record completed offline at 02:04 and synced at 05:30 can.
Built where the power goes off
ASCloud is built and supported in South Africa by ASC Food Safety Consultants, for plants that live with load shedding and cold stores that kill signal. That is why the offline behaviour is designed in rather than promised, and why we state its limits plainly.

Frequently asked questions
Does the app work fully offline?
No app we know of does. Open checklists complete offline and sync later. New tasks, templates, photos and the dashboard need a connection. We state this plainly because the auditor will ask.
How long can records wait on the device?
Until the device reconnects, as long as it stays charged. Keep a power bank per tablet for long stages.
Are the sync times visible to the auditor?
Yes. Each entry shows the time it was made on the device and the time it uploaded, so the record is honest about both.
