BRCGS document templates toolkit for South African food and packaging manufacturers

BRCGS is one of the most widely recognised food safety certifications in the world, and a common requirement for South African businesses that supply retailers or export to the United Kingdom and Europe. Building a BRCGS system from scratch is a large documentation exercise. A BRCGS document templates toolkit hands you that system already written to the standard, so you can focus on implementing and auditing rather than authoring.

What is BRCGS?

BRCGS (formerly BRC) publishes a family of Global Standards for food safety, packaging, storage and distribution, and more. The standards are recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative and are frequently named by retailers as a condition of supply, especially UK and European buyers. Certification requires a fully documented system covering the standard’s requirements, from senior-management commitment and the food safety plan through site standards, product control, process control and personnel.

The toolkit gives you that documented system, pre-written and structured to the relevant BRCGS standard and issue. You add your company, sites, products and processes, and you have a working BRCGS system ready to implement and audit, instead of interpreting the standard clause by clause on a blank page.

Why your documented system is everything

BRCGS audits are detailed and evidence-driven. The auditor works through the standard clause by clause, checking that each requirement is documented, implemented and recorded. A requirement that is not written down and evidenced becomes a non-conformity, and enough of those can cost you your grade. The documentation is the backbone that turns your good practice into something a BRCGS auditor can verify.

In a BRCGS audit, your documented system is the case you present. A toolkit makes sure that case is complete.

Writing that system from scratch is slow and risky. A toolkit removes the risk by giving you a complete, internally consistent set of documents that already addresses every clause of your BRCGS standard, so your effort goes into running real controls and gathering genuine evidence.

Which BRCGS toolkit do you need?

ASC offers a toolkit for each of the standards and levels South African businesses most often need:

Common mistakes to avoid

Where BRCGS projects usually go wrong

Under-cooking the root-cause analysis behind corrective actions; weak traceability and mass-balance evidence; documents that do not match what happens on the floor; and thin records in the run-up to the audit. A toolkit gives you the right structure, but auditors reward genuine implementation and evidence.

Who needs BRCGS in South Africa?

BRCGS is often the specific standard named by a retailer or importer. South African manufacturers supplying UK and European buyers, and those wanting a globally recognised badge of food safety, are the typical candidates. Packaging manufacturers use the Packaging Materials standard. Smaller or developing suppliers frequently start with the START! programme and grow towards the full standard as their systems mature.

Why choose the ASC toolkit

ASC Food Safety works with South African manufacturers and packers pursuing BRCGS every day, so the templates reflect how the standard is actually audited here. The documents are practical, current with the latest issues, and fully yours to keep and adapt. And because ASC also trains and consults, you can add exactly the help you need, from a quick review to a full pre-audit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the toolkit aligned to BRCGS Food Safety Issue 9?
Yes. The Food Safety toolkit is written to the current Issue 9 of the BRCGS Food Safety standard. Separate toolkits cover Packaging Materials Issue 7 and the START! Issue 2 programme.
What is the difference between START! and the full standard?
START! is a staged programme (Basic then Intermediate) that helps developing businesses build a food safety system step by step before certifying to the full BRCGS Food Safety standard. It is ideal if you are not yet ready for Issue 9.
Is BRCGS recognised by GFSI?
Yes. BRCGS standards are recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative and are accepted by many major retailers as evidence of a robust food safety system.
Will the toolkit get me certified on its own?
It provides the complete documented system that certification is based on. You still need to implement the procedures, keep genuine records and pass an audit by an accredited certification body.
Do you have a toolkit for packaging manufacturers?
Yes. The BRCGS Packaging Materials Issue 7 toolkit is written specifically for manufacturers of packaging that contacts or protects food.
Can ASC help us implement it?
Yes. ASC consultants can help you customise the documents, implement the system, train your team or run a pre-audit.
